Kodak, Martha Stewart set picture printing pact

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Eastman Kodak Co. said on Tuesday lifestyle guru Martha Stewart's company will design invitations, stationery and other products that enhance consumers' digital pictures under a pact aimed at boosting both of their online sales.

Under a multiyear agreement between Kodak and Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia Inc., the line of products is expected to debut in September, to coincide with the new season of Stewart's live television program and ahead of the start of the holiday shopping season.

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Martha Stewart products will remain exclusive to Kodak and its EasyShare Gallery "for a period of time," Martha Stewart Living Chief Executive Susan Lyne told Reuters, and revenue will be shared between the companies.

Some 89 million digital cameras are expected to be sold globally this year, a 15 percent increase, according to research company Infotrends. Despite its popularity, digital picture-taking leaves many photographers with the dilemma of how to print their shots.

Online services, such as Kodak's EasyShare Gallery, Hewlett-Packard Co.'s Snapfish and privately-held Shutterfly, allow users to put their pictures online, where they can be edited, shared with others, and printed and mailed.

Martha Stewart Living hopes to appeal to women as well as fans of the $3 billion scrapbooking market, where hobbyists fill albums with photographs and bits of memorabilia.

Kodak, which is undergoing a long tough transition to digital printing and services as its traditional film business shrinks, hopes the deal spurs camera users to make prints, from which Kodak earns revenue from paper, ink and photo developing systems.

"We do expect more customers as a result of the partnership, and ... we expect more printing as a result," said Kodak executive Sandra Morris.

Stewart, founder of the company that bears her name, said its products will range from photo books to stationery and stickers, and may serve as an alternative to professional printing in categories from holidays to babies.

"I will show (on the "Martha" TV program) how to make your own unbelievably professional-looking wedding invitations and save $20,000," she said. "The designs will be the value, and the fine paper and reproduction will be the Kodak partnership."

Prices for the Martha Stewart-designed products will be higher than typical Kodak products, she said.

GEORGETOWN, Ky. – DesignerZine readers have only a short time remaining to take advantage of free access to the articles on the site.

Effective July 1, DesignerZine content will be available only through a paid subscription of $50.00 per year.  Along with the new fee comes an array of new services for DZ subscribers.  Online classes, a formal mentor program, and an online designer showcase will all be launched before the end of 2006, said R. Lynn Baker, founding editor.  In addition, DZ will add classified ads, a designer gallery, hosting of online résumés, and a directory of manufacturers who pay endorsement fees to designers.

DesignerZine, at www.designerzine.com, is an online magazine and website committed to helping professional craft designers succeed in their design work and in their businesses.  Since its launch in February, registration at DesignerZine has been available free of charge.  More than 1,000 registered users have viewed articles ranging from interviews with top personalities in the craft industry to reviews of design books, and from tips on landing a design team spot to video interviews from the floor of the Craft and Hobby Association trade show.

“We are excited to be taking DesignerZine to the next level in terms of our ability to serve the interests of professional craft designers,” said Baker.

Advantus to Discontinue Magic Scraps

Via ScrapScene.com, Emily Adams' blog, and Ashley Smith's blog:

Jacksonville, Florida, June 12, 2006 – Advantus Corporation and Ashley Smith have announced that they will be discontinuing the Magic Scraps line of products beginning January 1, 2007. This was a mutual decision by both Ashley Smith, founder of Magic Scraps, and Kevin Carpenter, President of Advantus Corp.

Advantus will continue to sell Magic Scraps Scrappy Glue and Scrappy Tape on a go forward basis. The remaining Magic Scraps inventory will be available for sale while supplies last.

When asked about the decision to discontinue the Magic Scraps line of products, Kevin Carpenter said, “Advantus is committed to our craft and hobby division. At this time we find it necessary to focus our resources on the Cropper Hopper and Heidi Swapp brands. With the pending addition of two new major brands to be revealed at CHA Winter 2007, we made the difficult decision to discontinue Magic Scraps.”

Ashley Smith added, “I’m thankful for the experience that Advantus has given me, but I’m an entrepreneur at heart and happiest when I’m running my own business.”

Ashley and her husband Ben will be launching a new venture in digital scrapbooking, Polka Dot Potato (www.Polkadotpotato.com).

Same Differences Closing

Posted to Same Differences' owner, Kim Luty's blog, Carving Out a Niche: Moving forward:

After much contemplation and soul searching, I've decided that it's time to move on from Same-Differences in the scrapbooking world. This has been a terribly difficult decision to make because I believe so much in the goals of the company (scrapbooking and paper crafting supplies for all the non-traditional folks) and I'm reminded at every show and event how much people appreciate that there was 'something different' available to use in their projects. However, accolades and attention don't pay the bills, and after 2.5 years, it's no longer feasible for me to continue.
