DesignerZine Upgrades Services, Begins Paid Subscriptions

GEORGETOWN, Ky. – DesignerZine readers have only a short time remaining to take advantage of free access to the articles on the site.

Effective July 1, DesignerZine content will be available only through a paid subscription of $50.00 per year.  Along with the new fee comes an array of new services for DZ subscribers.  Online classes, a formal mentor program, and an online designer showcase will all be launched before the end of 2006, said R. Lynn Baker, founding editor.  In addition, DZ will add classified ads, a designer gallery, hosting of online résumés, and a directory of manufacturers who pay endorsement fees to designers.

DesignerZine, at www.designerzine.com, is an online magazine and website committed to helping professional craft designers succeed in their design work and in their businesses.  Since its launch in February, registration at DesignerZine has been available free of charge.  More than 1,000 registered users have viewed articles ranging from interviews with top personalities in the craft industry to reviews of design books, and from tips on landing a design team spot to video interviews from the floor of the Craft and Hobby Association trade show.

“We are excited to be taking DesignerZine to the next level in terms of our ability to serve the interests of professional craft designers,” said Baker.

Access to the forums will remain free to all, including non-subscribers.  Subscribers will have access to articles, videos, and other interactive features, plus the following new services at no additional charge:

Classified Ads.  A place for designers, manufacturers, writers, and others to seek help and advertise their services.

Workshops.  Free online workshops covering topics such as preparing portfolios, writing proposals and creating business cards.  Also in the works are in-depth online classes for an additional fee.

Mentor Program.  A mentor program that will match mentors and mentees for ongoing professional guidance and growth.  The program will be moderated to ensure all participants get the most from the mentoring experience.

Online Designer Showcase.  An event that will allow designers, manufacturers, publishers and the like to meet and discuss ways they can work together.

Designer Gallery.  A venue for designers to post their work.

Résumé Hosting
.  Designer résumés hosted at no charge.

Manufacturer Endorsement Program Directory.  A listing of manufacturers who compensate designers for work using their products.

Anyone who shares an interest in the success of professional designers is encouraged to subscribe, said Baker.

“When you, as a professional in the craft industry, subscribe to DesignerZine, you make an investment in your business,” said Baker.  “Many occupations have professional societies that contribute to one’s professional development.  Dues for these organizations are often much more than the subscription to DesignerZine, but we offer services similar to those of other professional organizations.

“When you want to develop your skills, learn to market yourself, mentor someone or be mentored, and gain added exposure to opportunities for work – DesignerZine is the place,” she said.

Manufacturers, instructors, writers, and others in the craft industry, as well as designers, are invited to subscribe.

DesignerZine strives to be a “one-stop” venue to connect craft designers to current trends, resources and opportunities in an interactive setting.  Services include the delivery of an online magazine, as well as a website that features video reports, audio interviews, message boards, and online chats with industry professionals.  DesignerZine’s staff comprises designers and experts from various areas of the industry.
