Let it be known that I can now officially join the ranks of those who so craftily knit their own socks. I attended the third in a series of three sock knitting classes at The Studio this afternoon, and am now the proud owner of a completed pair of handknit socks - handknit by ME!! Aren't they stunning??
I used a pattern supplied in class, but it's very similar to the basic sock pattern by Stephanie Pearl-McPhee (aka the Yarn Harlot). I knit mine with Tatamy Tweed yarn by Kraemer Yarns, in Sea Blue, a cotton-acrylic blend - I love that it's machine washable and dryer-safe.
My friends Jessica and Rachel have knit socks for what seems like forever and the works-in-progress always looked so 'pokey', with the double-pointed needles poking out everywhere. It looked so complex and well, impossible. Knowing they weren't *actually* impossible, I signed up for the class. Actually, wanting to learn how to knit socks was the reason I learned to knit in the first place!
People have warned me that sock knitting is addictive, and I must admit I am already planning my next pair. At the same time, however, I don't feel addicted, at least at this point. I have so many other projects running through my head to stick to one thing. But you can probably expect to see my handknit-garbed foot here again in the future. :)

I'd love to knit socks, they look great! Good job.
