Use Google Maps to Plot Your Ancestors
Here's an interesting use of GoogleMaps -- Via Lifehacker:
MapYourAncestors.com will turn your family tree into a free Google Map if you email them a completed Excel spreadsheet. The site gives you an example of what the finished map would look like by showing the family tree of George Bush.
According to the website:
Our mission is to provide a means whereby the hard work you put into genealogical research can be enjoyed to its fullest by you, your family, and your friends. The focus of this web site is to provide a tool for you to present your family history in a visual and exciting format that will enable you to bring genealogy "to life" for your children and friends...trace your ancestors' paths and zoom in on the satellite images of your great-great-great-grandparents' back yard.
I've seen some amazing applications of the Google Maps technology since it was introduced earlier this year (humans are so clever), but this is the first use that could apply to scrapbooking (as far as I know). It'd be neat to "map" your ancestors, then print that map out (on acid-free paper) to include in a heritage album. You could also use the Google Maps technology to aid you in tracking down family landmarks -- right down to driving directions -- so you could go take pictures of them to include in family albums.
How else could you use Google Maps for scrapbooking? (Beyond getting you to the closest store, that is!)
[Note: the image above is a Google Map for the hometowns of some of my maternal ancestors, in southwest Iowa.]
